A Textbook of Physical Chemistry (Vol. 1), 4/e

Dr K L Kapoor, formerly associate professor Hindu College, University of Delhi, has an experience of forty years of teaching Physical Chemistry.

A thorough understanding of the principles and basic concepts of physical chemistry is essential for a good grasp of the subject. This book is the sixth of the earlier five volume series, which provides an extensive coverage of the topics discussed focusing on the applications of the principles involved. Each of the earlier five volumes distinguishes itself by projecting the subject through number of illustrative solutions of numerical and typical problems. Each chapter is appended with Revision Problems, Try Yourself Problems and Numerical Problems so as to widen the scope for the students. It, thus, helps them extend their knowledge beyond the book and understand the subject in its totality. To provide quantitative basis for the better understanding of various principles and basic concepts of Physical Chemistry, the present sixth volume on the Computational Aspects in Physical Chemistry is devised, which provides enough applications to meet this requirement.

Anti-Money Laundering & Know Your Customer

Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF) formerly The Indian Institute of Bankers, established in 1928, is a professional body of banks, financial institutions and their employees in India. During its 82 years of service, IIBF has emerged as a premier institute in banking and finance education for those employed in the sector, aiming for professional excellence. Since its inception, the Institute has awarded over 5 lakh banking and finance qualifications, viz; JAIIB, CAIIB, Diplomas and Certificates in specialized areas. The pedagogy of Distance Learning offered by the Institute comprises (i)publishing specific courseware for each paper/examination; (ii) publishing work books; (iii) holding tutorials through accredited institutions; (iv) organizing contact classes; (v) conducting virtual classes; (vi) offering e-learning through portal; (vii) organizing campus training for selected courses, etc.

Money-laundering has acquired a global character that not only threatens security, but also compromises the stability, transparency and efficiency of financial systems. Money-laundering techniques are becoming more sophisticated and complex with each passing day.

Across the world, banks and financial institutions are required to introduce and implement systems to prevent anti-social elements from using banking channels for money laundering.

Adoption of appropriate know-your-customer (KYC) procedures within individual banks is an essential part of risk management in banks, to safeguard the confidence and the integrity of banking systems.

The book provides the theoretical background on the subject and practical steps for banks implementing an AML/KYC regime in accordance with international standards. It explains the basic elements required to build an effective AML/KYC framework and summarizes the role of the employees in fighting money laundering. The highlight of the book is that it also contains the Guidance Notes for banks on AML and KYC issued by Indian Banks’ Association.

This book would help in gaining a deeper knowledge and understanding on the various aspects of AML/KYC and will be useful to bankers, academicians and policy makers.

Basic Complex Analysis of One Variable

Anant R. Shastri began his mathematical career at School of Mathematics, TIFR Mumbai. After obtaining his doctorate from Mumbai University, he has visited universities and research institutes all over Europe, USA, Canada, Taiwan and Japan. He was an associate at International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy during 1993-99. Since 1988, Dr. Shastri is serving in the Department of Mathematics, IIT Bombay, as a full professor.
He has been continually associated with the Advanced Training in Mathematics programme of National Board for Higher Mathematics. He takes keen interest in teaching mathematics at all levels. Professor Shastri plays Dhrupad style music on flute and is an ardent chess player.

Thorough, yet simple, Basic Complex Analysis is an ideal mathematics text and reference for students as well as teachers at graduate and postgraduate levels. Written in an informal and interactive style, the book does not confront burden the students with definitions and theorems. Rather, each result is approached logically and explained patiently, with special emphasis on common questions that bother learners. The topological background needed in the development has been woven into the main body with great restraint.

The book covers most of the standard topics. It begins with the basics of complex numbers with equal emphasis on algebraic and geometric aspects. Analytic functions are introduced immediately after complex differentiation. Cauchy''s theorem on line integrals is treated in two essentially different approaches with many immediate applications. The book later explains local properties of holomorphic functions, the concept of winding numbers, etc. There is an entire chapter on computing line integrals. The book then takes the student to the deeper aspects of Cauchy''s theory, meromorphic functions, Runge''s theorem, special functions such as the gamma-function and Riemann zeta-function, Riemann mapping theorem, Dirichlet''s problem for harmonic functions with an application to the classification of multiply connected domains, etc.
The book concludes with a discussion on periodic functions, modular functions, and Picard''s theorems as an application.
